Ali, start working with Cycling Jordan at age 16 as a volunteer, with 7 years of building his knowlage about bike parts and mechanic he made it up to become our workshop manager and the offical mechanic.

when I was studying at Jordan university buses wouldn’t stop for me and usually the busses would arrive full and so they’d prefer to let girls get in. As a result I would be late for my classes but I couldn’t afford to buy a car or ride a taxi every day. Even then, taxis pick and choose passengers and the areas they go to. That’s where I got the idea to fix my old bike and use it. Although the university security wouldn’t let me use the bike inside the campus because they think that bikes are just for fun so I would have to leave it at the gate. It’s made a huge difference in time of my trip, from an hour spent searching for something to ride to around 7 minutes. I got used to the journey and I use the bike for all my trips not just the ones to university and I’ve even convinced my friends to do the same.

I wish I could spread bike culture in transportation; the idea’s been present for a while but the fear of societies response remains. The hilly nature of the country also discourages people. I think this is changing though, especially after I saw people’s response to Hawazin’s story, their acceptance of biking and the promises of the Ministry of Transportation to make a bike lane in some areas. At the same time some are suggesting, to assist us in providing bikes for students, among them Petra University. Our initiative will start in Amman, Irbid, and Madaba and aims to expand all over Jordan. That’s how we achieve our goal to provide alternative transportation for students which would be a real achievement for our country”.
