MOUNT NEBO TO MUKAWER

Mount Nebo is a mountain ridge located 10 km (6 mi) west of the Roman Byzantine town of Madaba. Mount Nebo is located 710 meters (2,330 ft) above sea level and has a panorama view of Palestine across the Jordan River Valley. From the summit, it is often possible to see the city of Jericho and even as far as Jerusalem on a clear day. The mountain is famous for the reference in the Bible, where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death.

The views of the dead sea and the Jordan valley accompany us as we head down to the Ma'an valley, through Ma'an village, and eventually to Mukawer village, also known as Machaerus.

The final destination is the Mukawer archaeological site next to the modern village of Mukawer, located on the south bank of Wadi Zarqa Ma'in, around 30 km (18.6 mi) southwest of Madaba. You will see the dead sea region from this hilltop fortified palace, including the view of Palestine. According to Flavius Josephus, it was here at the Fortress of Machaerus where Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, ordered the imprisonment and beheading of John the Baptist.

Mount Nebo to Mukawer is an intermediate bike route. It includes the occasional easy climb starting from 710 meters above sea level Mount Nebo. The trail will bring you through countryside roads, crossing Fayhaa, Ma'an, and Mukawer villages, where local families are keen on a little chat with a cyclist like you. As Mount Nebo and Mukawer both have stunning viewpoints, it is no surprise that the trail is filled with panoramic roads of the Dead Sea, taking your breath away! You will roll up and down some hill roads that might be a bit challenging at times, which are rewarded by the incredible Mukawer Castle (Machaerus- the fortified hilltop palace).
