The archaeological site of Um Qais dates back to the second half of the third century, most likely as a military colony under Alexander the Great with the name ‘Gadara’. The Battle of Yarmouk took place not too far from Gadara; it changed the region under Arab-Muslim rule. However, the city was destroyed by the Galilee earthquake. Despite the limited reconstruction, the settlement continued to exist to no less than the 11th century. The site has two ancient theatres, the basilica terrace, and an ottoman village.

The ancient city was on the trade route between Palestine and Syria. Additionally, it reflects the political, commercial, and military boundaries and explains the name change to Mukais, meaning customs house or border place. The town was also a center for tax collection under the Ottoman relating to the word Mkeis. It is the root of the modern name Um Qais.

Berket al Arrayes is a natural sinkhole and is one of Jordan’s hidden gems in spring. It is located on a mountain range near the Yarmouk River. The sinkhole, also often referred to as a pond, is one of the most beautiful in Jordan and provides a vital biodiversity hotspot for migratory birds, including various endangered species. Arrayes means bride or newlywed in Arabic; the story goes that the local community named it that way because brides wash with water for blessing before marriage.
