The trail will start at Wadi Rum Desert. We will pass by the Hijaz Railway near the Desert Highway. The station and the locomotive are a memorandum to the century-old conflict shaping the Middle East as we know it today. The railway system was an instrumental tool for communication and development under the Ottoman Empire. The numerous attacks between 1916 and 1918 were critical to the defeat of the Turks, ending the Great War, and the formation of the new nations of Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
Wadi Rum desert is also known as the Valley of the Moon and feels like Mars on Earth. Located around 60km (37 mi) to the east of the red sea town of Aqaba lies the dramatic desert characterized by its vast sandstone mountains and granite rocks, which reach 1700 meters (5577 ft) and higher. Narrow canyons and deep splits reveal water sources, and ancient rock drawings carved by the people of the desert can all be found in Rum's mountains. Many human cultures have inhabited the rock formations of Rum since prehistoric times. The Bedouin tribes featuring large goat-hair tents are the latest and still living in the desert.
