Qasr Amra is one of the best-known desert castles in present-day eastern Jordan. The castle was built in the early 8th century by Walid Ibn Yazid, the future Umayyad caliph Walid II, who was the rising dominance of the region at the time. It is seen as one of the most significant examples of early Islamic art and architecture.

The castle is located roughly 85km (53 mi) from Amman and 21km (13 mi) from Azraq.

The Azraq Wetland Reserve was created over 250,000 years ago due to geological changes that established aquifers. The area is an oasis for migratory birds and was established as a reserve in 1978, covering 12 km2. The natural springs dried out in 1998; however, artificial springs are now maintaining biodiversity.
