Wadi Faynan is a three-hour car ride from Amman. The wadi was originally one of the biggest copper mines in the Roman Empire and one of the three primary copper mines in the world. Faynan is located south of the Dead Sea and east of Wadi Araba. Nowadays, a part of the wadi falls under the Dana Biosphere Reserve, including eco-hotels and lodges under the supervision of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). However, for a long time, the Natural Resource Authority in Jordan scouted and assessed the area in the hope that enough copper could be found in the mountains, providing the nation with much-needed natural resources.

Wadi Faynan and its neighbor Wadi Ghuweir are known for their rich diversity in sandstones, waterfalls, gardens of palm trees, and narrow gorges.

The finishing point is Wadi Araba, which separates Palestine from Jordan. The valley stretches from the Dead Sea all the way south to Aqaba, stretching around 150km (93 mi). The desert area belongs to the Great Rift Valley and reaches a height of 450m (1476 ft) above sea level to a low of 400m (1312 ft) below sea level on the Jordan side.
